Hey There~
How ya'll doin'? I hope you're having a good day.
In the age of technology its fairly easy to take a wide variety of tools for granted in favor of making a pretty picture. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this but it can cause us to lose site of the basics. We can end up losing sight of our ability to make an image using only what we have. Its easier to make a grand image on a computer when everything is available to you. But when we take a traditional route, what we have is all we have. You can't hit the undo button when you make a faulty brush stroke. You either fix it or start over. Sometimes you even run out of material.
Today, I come to you all with a little challenge. To take the digital aspect of art and try to apply some of the traditional basics.
I really enjoy coming up with little challenges for myself to help myself improve. One particular challenge I've made has piqued some of the interest of my friends and they felt I should share it so people can try it for themselves.
The main priority of this challenge is to limit your artistic tools and only use what is available to you.
1 Pallet
1 Layer
1 Tool
Apple- 111 Pallet Challenge by I-D-K-Y
~RULES~
1. You are to go online and use a random pallet generator to give you the colors you will use. Whatever the first pallet is, MUST be the pallet you use for the entire image. You can only use 1 pallet.
Generator I used -> coolors.co/
2.The piece is to be done on a single layer. This means all of the sketching, drafting and final details as well. So only 1 layer is to be used. IF you do lineart this rule still applies. Recommended to not use the "UNDO" option.
3.You are to pick one medium to use during the entire process. Meaning if you use the pen tool you are only allowed that single pen tool an nothing more. same with a brush or pencil. You only use 1 tool.
4. the image can be of anything and drawing in any style you see fit. If you want to do landscapes, anime, portraits, etc, so long as it follows the first 3 rules, you are able to draw whatever you please.
5. Tag me.
You are not allowed to-
Generate a different pallet because you do not like/are intimidated by the one you are given.
Have over five or under 3 colors in the pallet
Use filters or effects (blur, glow, noise filters, etc) to adjust the image.
Start the image over because you do not like the outcome.
You are allowed to-
Use references
Ask for advice from peers
Like I said, part of the challenge is limiting your tools. Using what your are given to make whatever you can. Part of the artistic process is learning to reshape your "happy accidents" into something you can feel confident in. Humble yourself like when you draw on paper with one pencil and a eraser. Or like when you were a child and you only had 8 crayons.

If you feel this challenge to too hard, or you are uncertain of how to address it, then I will allow for the following adjustments.
Adjustments that can be made-
Duplicate the layer you are working on so you can step back if you make a mistake.
Start with gray scale and shade over it with the pallet.
Use multiple tools
And if you REALLY need to, pick a different pallet.
If you are to do any of these i would ask you only do 1 of the 4 adjustments. You are required to say if any of these things apply.
I understand that something like this can come off as intimidating. So I wont hold it against anyone for wanting to tone it down a bit. But I encourage people to take the dive and face the challenge head on. Do the best you can, don't judge yourself too harshly. Go with the flow and don't worry about making it perfect. Just do the best with what you have. :>
